Mrs. Johnson

Grade 2

Hello Families,

I am so happy to be your child's teacher this year!  I am a returning 2nd grade teacher.  Last year was my first year at MVE as I transferred with my family to Colorado from the Dallas area of Texas. My husband and I have been married for 33 years and we have three children, a lawyer in California, a producer for Fox News in Utah, and a freshman at Chapparal High School.

Michigan is where I grew up and earned my undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University.  Teaching is my jam!  My teaching experience over the last 20 years includes teaching mostly first and third grades in several states across the country.  I recently earned my Master's of Education degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in Curriculum and Instruction in Math K-12.

Some of my favorite things to do are running, exercising, traveling, reading, and spending time with my family. I completed three 5K runs this summer and hope to complete a 10K in September!

I look forward to working with you and your student this year.  It is going to be an amazing year!

Welcome to Second Grade!

Copy of Mrs. Johnson's 2nd Grade Behavior Plan

Behavior Management plan

This is our class behavior management plan.  You will also find a copy of  it in your child's white folder that comes home each daY.  Please review it with your child.  The communication folder will come home with your child with the number of points earned for the day.  Students receive 2 dojo points when they return the folder with a parent's initials.  You may send any notes for me in this folder as well.

Birthday Celebrations

Birthday celebrations are important in our classroom!  Please limit treats to small treat bags or store bought goods only.  We have some students who have dietary limitations.  Also, if you are sending birthday party invitations, there must be enough for every student in the class.  We currently have 23 students.  Thank you so much for respecting these guidelines.

Behavior/Expectations

I use ClassDojo in our classroom.  I love giving out points for awesome behavior and work!  Make sure you pick up your child's log in information so you can connect with us on Class Dojo.  Students will earn passes with their points such as "no homework for a night pass, decorate your desk, bring a stuffed animal to school" etc. I also love to reward kiddos with a sweet treat every now and again.  I believe kids are capable of incredible things and positive reinforcement brings out the best in all of us!

MVE Positive Behavior System

At Mountain View, the students can earn 'MV3 Slips' this year for demonstrating respect, responsibility and safety throughout the building. They can earn these as a whole class or as individuals. The class can earn these for being MV3 (Respect, Responsibility, Safety) from other adults in the building.  The individual slips will have a place for their name and a brief description of what they did to earn them. When they earn as individuals, one copy of the slip will be turned into the office and possibly read on announcements. The other copy will be sent home for celebration at home! When our class reaches 100 Paw Slips (a combined total of individual and whole-class) we will celebrate with a Paw Party!  The class will decide on these parties and I will email you to let you know.

Homework

We will have homework M-Th.  Students will be expected to read for 20 minutes.  Students can read to an adult, older or younger, sibling.  Be sure to ask questions about what your child has read, such as:  Who are the characters in the story?, Where does the story take place?, What is the problem in the story?  How is the problem solved?  Tell about what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  This builds comprehension and shows that the student understands what is happening in the story and not just calling out words.

Your student may occasionally bring home their math work from the day if they were unable to complete it in class.  This could happen for a variety of reasons.  If this is the case, please complete it at home and return the next day.

Yellow folders will go home on Thursday's with work we've completed that week.  Please review all assignments with your child as there may be some unfinished work to return.  Yellow folders need to be emptied returned on Friday unless unfinished work is returned.

We will not have weekly spelling tests.  However, I will post 10-15 words each week that coincide with the spelling patterns we are studying in phonics each week.  If you would like to practice them at home that is great and will help to build reading and spelling skills. This is optional.
